We may be a consciousness having an experience of queerness, an experience of wealth, poverty, blackness in America, a woman in Yemen, a plumber in Russia.
It also fails to explore that we might not “be” our identity but something different. This denies the blurry, overlapping and dynamic nature of human beings. We label, box and divide selves, and groups of selves by defining characteristics. Postmodernism is fascinated with identity and demands that we explore self and what that means. Ultimately, however, being defined by one’s gender or sexuality or sexual choices is not very satisfying. The ever-reducing and narrow labels and identifications might be liberating in the early days of coming out, finding community and relief from oppression.
